International Migration Statistics, 2023


316 thousand 456 people immigrated to Türkiye
In 2023, number of immigrants decreased by 35.9% compared to the previous year and declined to 316 thousand 456 people. While 54.2% of this population were males, 45.8% were females. When immigrant population was examined by citizenship, 101 thousand 677 persons were Turkish citizens and 214 thousand 779 persons were foreign nationals.

714 thousand 579 people emigrated from Türkiye
Number of emigrants increased by 53% compared to the previous year and reached to 714 thousand 579 people in 2023. While 55.2% of this population were males, 44.8% were females. When emigrant population was examined by citizenship, 291 thousand 377 persons were Turkish citizens and 423 thousand 202 persons were foreign nationals.
The largest migrant population was in the 20-24 and 25-29 age group
In 2023, it was seen that 12.7% of the immigrant population were in the 20-24 age group. This age group was followed by 25-29 age group with 10.8% and 15-19 age group with 10.3%, respectively. When the age distribution of emigrant population was analyzed, it was seen that 15% of them were in the 25-29 age group. This age group was followed by 30-34 age group with 12.9% and 20-24 age group with 12.5%.

The province with the highest number of immigrants and emigrants was İstanbul
When immigrant population in 2023 were analyzed by provinces, it was seen that İstanbul had the largest immigrant population with the proportion of 29.2%. İstanbul was followed by Antalya with 9.5%, Ankara with 6.5%, Mersin with 4.9% and Bursa with 4.4%, respectively.
When the emigrants were analyzed by provinces, it was seen that İstanbul had the largest emigrant population with the proportion of 36.4%. İstanbul was followed by Antalya with 10%, Ankara with 7.1%, İzmir with 3.5% and Bursa with 2.6%, respectively.

13.2% of foreign immigrants were comprised of Russian citizens
Citizens of Russian Federation took the first place in the foreign immigrant population in 2023 with 13.2%. This group was followed by citizens of Azerbaijan with 8.2%, Turkmenistan with 7.3%, Iran with 6.7% and Afghanistan with 5.9%, respectively.
On the other hand, Russian citizens took the first place in the foreign emigrant population with 17%. This group was followed by citizens of Iraq with 15.7%, Afghanistan with 8.3%, Iran with 6.5% and Turkmenistan with 4.9%, respectively.

EXPLANATIONS
Annual migration flow statistics are calculated based on Address Registration System (ARS), where the records of Turkish citizens and foreigners residing in Türkiye are kept, and the database on Turkish citizens residing abroad. Both these two systems are updated by the General Directorate of Civil Registration and Citizenship Affairs affiliated to the Ministry of Interior.
In addition to births occurred inside the country and deaths in the reference period, cases such as late registration of births and deaths in the previous years, naturalization processes, changes in the legal status of migrants, delays in address declaration inside the country or abroad, residence and work permit application processes and compulsory military service abroad are excluded from the migration calculations.
