Future Tech Innovators Shine

10 September 2024, Basseterre, Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis - Sixteen dynamic teams of high school students, aged 13-18, from Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Christopher (St Kitts) and Nevis, and Saint Lucia demonstrated their technology prowess with the unveiling of their health care and disaster management chatbots on 30 August 2024 in a competitive Chatbot Showcase.

These innovative projects are the culmination of the students' transformative learning experience at the ECCU Generative AI and Python Summer Camp 2024. The students' chatbot designs were marked by impressive creativity, technical sophistication, and a clear vision of real-world applications, offering compelling proof of the practical and impactful knowledge they gained.

Sponsored by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) and the Republic of China (Taiwan), and facilitated by a coalition of public and private sector IT professionals in collaboration with the Ministries of Education, the camp provided a platform for students to master cutting-edge skills in generative artificial intelligence, Python programming, data analytics, and user experience design. This transformative educational initiative equipped them with tools to lead in tomorrow's digital landscape.

As the teams showcased their innovative projects, three teams emerged victorious based on the judges' assessments of creativity, functionality, user experience, potential for real-world application, and the clarity of their oral presentations.

1st Place - Team Pink Panthers from St. Kitts and Nevis wowed the judges with Miss Khalifa, a chatbot designed to provide teenagers with accurate, non-judgmental sexual health education. With teen-friendly language, Miss Khalifa offers life-saving information in an approachable way, empowering users with critical knowledge.

2nd Place - Team Azure Avengers from St. Kitts and Nevis developed Navi, a chatbot that provides instant, personalized weather and traffic updates. Designed to serve a wide range of users, including residents, tourists, and businesses, Navi ensures accurate information to help with daily and long-term planning in sectors like tourism, agriculture and event management.

3rd Place - Team AI-den from Saint Lucia impressed with AI-den, a chatbot set to revolutionize emergency care by enhancing patient assessment and diagnosis accuracy. The system streamlines processes and ultimately aims to save lives through its intelligent response capabilities.

The ECCB and its partners remain committed to fostering the talents and skills of these young tech innovators, ensuring that the knowledge they've gained will continue to benefit their communities and the wider world. This summer camp not only equipped students with cutting-edge skills but has also inspired a future generation of leaders ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow through technology. Camps are being planned for students in the other ECCB member countries for December 2024. The ECCB is committed to provide 500 students in the ECCU with similar opportunities every year, for the next five years.
