Ceremonies for Tedrick Welcome Center and Mike Hanes Marching Salukis Band Tower

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The SIU Foundation and Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host two special events on Friday, Oct. 11. The first will break ground on a new building that will enrich the university, and the second will name a tower in honor of a beloved bandleader. Reporters, photographers and news crews are invited to cover one or both events.

At 2:30 p.m., there will be a groundbreaking ceremony for the Tedrick Welcome Center, inside the construction fencing at 1255 Lincoln Drive. Speakers will include Chancellor Austin Lane, SIU System President Dan Mahony, SIU Foundation Board of Directors President Diane Compardo and SIU alumnus Greg Cook, who has been instrumental in the planning process. A dedication ceremony for the Mike Hanes Marching Salukis Band Tower will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. at Sam Rinella Field (beside Charlotte West Stadium). Speakers will include Lane, Mahony, Phil and Pam Pfeffer, Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Relations and SIU Foundation CEO Matt Kupec, Richard Kelley, director of the SIU School of Music, George Brozak, director of athletic bands, and Mike Hanes' daughter, Lisa.
