Covington Strengthens Patent Litigation Practice

October 7, 2024

WASHINGTON-Indranil ("Indy") Mukerji, a first-chair patent trial lawyer, has joined Covington's Patent Litigation practice as a partner, located in the firm's Washington office. Steve Marshall, a patent litigator with decades of trial and litigation experience, has also joined the firm's Patent Litigation practice as of counsel in the Washington office.

With twenty-five years' experience spanning nearly 200 patent cases, Indy has handled both jury and bench trials in many of the most important patent venues in the country, for some of the biggest companies in the world. His work has involved nearly every aspect of computer hardware, software, and networking technology, including semiconductors, microprocessors, mobile devices, operating systems, wireless networking, data storage, batteries, memory/DRAM, consumer electronics, enterprise security systems, network identity management, e-commerce, video streaming/processing, and displays. In addition to litigating in district courts throughout the United States, Indy has deep experience litigating at the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. A registered patent attorney, he also is involved with proceedings before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

"Indy is an important part of the future of our practice. He brings a wealth of experience and deep expertise that will significantly strengthen our capabilities. As a first-chair patent litigator, he has an impressive reputation for his courtroom skills, creativity, and highly strategic thinking," said Gary Rubman, co-chair of Covington's Patent Litigation Practice. "Beyond those credentials, Indy brings a vibrant energy and collaborative nature that align perfectly with the group and firm's culture. We are fortunate to be able to add Indy to what already is one of the deepest and strongest benches of patent trial lawyers in the country."

"I am delighted to be joining Covington's top notch patent litigation group, a worldwide team which has enormous technical depth and experience trying cases for household-name tech companies. The fact that we share many overlapping client relationships, and the fact that I previously practiced with a fantastic senior Covington patent litigation partner (Brian Nester), were both compelling factors for me," Indy said.

Steve is a senior and experienced patent litigator who focuses on representing leading technology companies in patent litigation in district courts throughout the country, as well as at the ITC and Federal Circuit. Like Indy, Steve's practice has focused on nearly every important aspect of computer and networking technology, and he routinely leverages his pre-lawyer experience working as an engineer. He and Indy have practiced together for more than 15 years, and clients have recognized him repeatedly for his strong mix of technical depth and case management capabilities.

"We are delighted to welcome Steve. His background and many years of experience representing leading technology companies will significantly benefit our clients," said Erica Andersen, co-chair of Covington's Patent Litigation Practice.

Indy earned his J.D. from Boston University and B.S. and masters in engineering from Cornell University. Steve earned his J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law and B.S. in computer science from Notre Dame.
