Italy-Argentina joint declaration

Traduzione di cortesia

Italy and Argentina maintain a solid and deep relationship, based on shared values and a rich historical and cultural heritage. Cooperation between our two countries is constant and fruitful, not only at a bilateral level, but also in multilateral contexts, where we work together to promote peace, democracy and respect for human rights.
In this spirit of sharing, as already jointly reaffirmed in multilateral forums, Italy and Argentina express their deep concern for the situation in Venezuela and reaffirm their solidarity with Venezuelans who continue to ask for a more democratic, prosperous and secure future.
The election results announced by the CNE have neither credibility nor democratic legitimacy, as reflected in the reports provided by the panel of UN and independent international experts, as well as in the data published by the opposition. More than two months after the presidential elections of 28 July, despite repeated appeals by the international community and the Venezuelan people to ensure electoral transparency, the relevant authorities have still not published detailed and independently verifiable results.
Italy and Argentina condemn the repression and violation of human rights and demand that those arbitrarily detained be released and that due process be
respected. Furthermore, we deplore the climate of intimidation towards the opposition that has culminated in an arrest order against Edmundo González, the
candidate who, according to verifiable data published by the opposition, is the winner of the elections, and who has been forced to leave the country.
We reiterate the need for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to return to the country immediately, and urge Venezuela to fulfil its commitments under international law - in particular as a party to the Caracas Convention on Diplomatic Asylum of 1954 - by allowing the six asylum seekers currently residing in the Residence of the Republic of Argentina in Caracas to leave the country.
We demand that Venezuelan political leaders engage in an inclusive and constructive dialogue, allowing for a peaceful transition and the restoration of democratic institutions, in accordance with the will of the people expressed in the presidential elections of 28 July.
Italy and Argentina will continue to work together to maintain the focus on Venezuela and to support the efforts of international and regional partners, so as to promote a peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis.
