In a world where hunger and malnutrition continue to plague millions of people, the need for collective action has never been more urgent. CGIAR has taken a further step toward addressing these global challenges by officially becoming a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty (GAAHP), a Brazilian G20 initiative that collects and displays several policy tools to combat hunger and poverty globally, by addressing multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By joining the GAAHP, CGIAR reaffirms its commitment to supporting and accelerating the achievement of these goals.
The Global Alliance recognizes that hunger and malnutrition are symptoms of broader, structural problems like poverty and inequality. To address these issues effectively, CGIAR has committed to the full and equitable implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which calls for concerted action to eliminate poverty and hunger in all their forms and dimensions. CGIAR's involvement in the Global Alliance will play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.
"CGIAR is thrilled to be a founding member of the Global Alliance, recognizing the Brazilian G20 Presidency's important focus on poverty, food insecurity, and resilience. Our commitment is to work alongside partners to drive transformative change in food systems, harnessing science and innovation to build resilience in agriculture and uplift rural communities. By strengthening collaborations and pioneering new approaches, the Global Alliance can shape a future where nutritious food is accessible to all and sustainable practices benefit both people and the planet," said CGIAR Executive Managing Director, Dr. Ismahane Elouafi.
CGIAR is committed to aligning its research and expertise with the Alliance's mission to eradicate hunger and poverty worldwide. Through a collaborative, evidence-based approach, CGIAR supports Global Alliance member countries in implementing policy solutions that enhance food security, nutrition, social protection, and sustainable agricultural practices. Prioritizing countries where CGIAR has established policy interventions, it offers technical assistance, capacity building, and knowledge-sharing, helping governments to develop country-led, inclusive programs focused on supporting vulnerable populations and smallholder farmers.
In partnership with other Global Alliance members, CGIAR will contribute to building robust solutions by leveraging its research on policy and institutional innovations. This includes identifying synergies between CGIAR's work and the Alliance's policy basket, conducting cost-benefit assessments in selected countries, and sharing insights from cross-cutting studies on achieving sustainable development goals (SDG 1 and SDG 2). By promoting shared learning and mobilizing resources, CGIAR plays a pivotal role in supporting resilient food systems and advancing the Global Alliance's goals of reducing inequality and fostering just transitions in agriculture.
CGIAR's decision to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty marks a significant step forward. Through its research, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and commitment to supporting country-level policy implementation, CGIAR is well-positioned to play a critical role in achieving the SDGs and ensuring a brighter future for vulnerable populations around the globe.
By working together with the GAAHP and other partners, CGIAR is committed to transforming global food, land, and water systems, promoting sustainable development, and creating lasting change in the lives of those who need it most.
