Mayoral Proclamation - Diabetes Awareness Month

Diabetes is a serious and costly disease growing at an epidemic rate globally and is the eighth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States.

WHEREAS, Diabetes is a serious and costly disease growing at an epidemic rate globally and is the eighth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Diabetes affects 38.4 million people in the United States and an additional 97.6 million adults are affected by pre-diabetes, a condition which puts them at greater risk for developing Type 2 diabetes; and

WHEREAS, In North Dakota, approximately 51,000 adults have diagnosed diabetes, 15,000 people do not know they have diabetes and individuals with diabetes will experience 2.3 times greater health care costs; and

WHEREAS, Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person's pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables an individual's body to use energy from food; and

WHEREAS, Approximately 64,000 people are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes each year; the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a steady increase in prevalence of Type 1 diabetes since 2001, most significantly a 30% rise in diagnosis rates from 2018 to 2020; and

WHEREAS, Accessibility and affordability of diabetes-related prescriptions, care and management devices can significantly improve the ability of people with diabetes to manage the disease before suffering devastating complications.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Dr. Timothy J. Mahoney, Mayor of the City of Fargo, North Dakota, do hereby proclaim November 2024 to be

DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH

in the City of Fargo and encourage all citizens to help fight the diabetes epidemic by increasing awareness and by providing support.
