Heat Alert: Friday, August 2, 2024

A heat alert issued by Environment Canada has activated the municipal Hot Weather Response Plan.

Libraries and Citizen Service Centres

The following libraries and citizen service centres will be available as cooling centres under an extended schedule:

Friday, August 2:

  • Main Public Library 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (upper level only from 5 to 8 p.m.)
  • New Sudbury Public Library 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Valley East Public Library and Citizen Service Centre 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Chelmsford Public Library and Citizen Service Centre 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Saturday, August 3:

  • Main Public Library 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (upper level only from 2 to 6 p.m.)
  • South End Public Library 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

All other branches will also be available as cooling centres in accordance with their regular schedule of operations. Visit sudburylibraries.ca for a detailed schedule of hours and locations.

Beaches

The City's seven beaches have regularly scheduled lifeguards in place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

Lifeguard supervision at Bell Park Main, Moonlight, Nepahwin and Kalmo beaches will be extended to 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 3. The regular beach supervision schedule at these beaches is expected to resume on Sunday, August 4, pending the end of the heat alert.

Arenas

Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex will be open 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, August 2 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 3

Pool hours for Friday, August 2:

Nickel District Pool

Adult/Lane Swim 12 - 12:55 p.m.

Public Swim 2 - 2:55 p.m.

RG Dow Pool

Adult/Lane Swim 12 to 12:55 p.m.

Gatchell Pool

Public Swim 11 to 11:55 a.m.

Adult/Lane Swim 12 to 12:55 p.m.

Family Swim 6:30 - 7:25 p.m.

Public Swim 7:30 - 8:25 p.m.

Adult/Lane Swim 8:30 - 9:25 p.m.

Splash Pads

The City's 15 splash pads are open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Visit www.greatersudbury.ca/splashpads for locations.

Residents Requiring Additional Assistance

City and community outreach teams will provide support to homeless and vulnerable populations as part of their regular outreach program, including:

  • providing transit tickets to enable access to cooling centres, drop-ins and other safe locations
  • providing water and refillable water bottles as needed, and
  • connecting individuals to other community supports if required.

There is an outdoor drinking water fountain open at Memorial Park along with a water bottle refill station. There is also a water refill station available outside the Sudbury Community Arena.
