HHSC Observes World Day Against Trafficking in Persons

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is observed on July 30 to help raise awareness of human trafficking.

Sponsored by the United Nations, the theme for this year's observance is "Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Human Trafficking," which highlights the importance of accelerated action to end child trafficking. Children represent a significant proportion of trafficking victims worldwide, with girls being disproportionately affected, according to the United Nations.

The HHSC Texas Human Trafficking Resource Center works to raise awareness about human trafficking and connect health care providers to resources needed to locate services, help prevent trafficking, and recognize and respond to potential trafficking situations. The center also serves as the liaison between external stakeholders and agency programs and approves trainings for health care providers.

"HHSC continues to expand access to human trafficking prevention training for all health care practitioners in Texas," said Megan Bermea, director of the HHSC Office of Family Services. "Health care workers are on the front lines to identify and assist those at risk or victims of labor and sex trafficking, including youth and adolescents. Preventing and intervening early to assist victims ensures young survivors have a better chance for recovery and positive long-term health outcomes."

Child sex trafficking is also addressed through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) of Texas. Funding for both child advocacy organizations is administered by the Office of Family Services.

"Texas CASA and CACs of Texas provide resources, training and coordination of services for children in their care who are at risk or have been victimized by child sex trafficking and exploitation," Bermea said.

In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott and HHSC unveiled the "Stop Human Trafficking" specialty license plate for Texas drivers. The Human Trafficking Resource Center collaborated with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) on the specialty license plate as a reminder to report human trafficking online at iWatchtx.org.

The specialty license plate is available for purchase on the DMV website. Proceeds go to the Stop Human Trafficking donation account to pay for treatment services, shelter and support for youth survivors of human trafficking.
