AISI Applauds DOE Pilot Program on Emissions Intensity

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced a pilot project to measure and calculate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity of certain energy-intensive industrial products, like steel. AISI President and CEO Kevin Dempsey applauded the initiative and highlighted the American steel industry's ongoing efforts on the issue, which has become even more significant as trade and decarbonization policies increasingly intersect.

"American steel is the cleanest in the world and American steel producers are investing significant dollars to further reduce GHG emissions. But these investments will be put at risk if countries that produce steel with higher GHG emissions are allowed to undercut cleaner American steel products. We welcome DOE's analysis, which will be critical to demonstrating this current imbalance in emissions intensity and to developing policies that hold foreign producers accountable for their higher emissions. AISI looks forward to continuing to work with the administration to ensure and enhance the competitiveness of the American steel industry and the manufacturing sector as a whole."
