D.A. Bragg Announces Additional Sex Trafficking Charges Against Man Who Allegedly Kidnapped Covenant House Teen

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., announced today the superseding indictment of ALEX JEAN, 37, for kidnapping, raping, and trafficking two women in Manhattan and New Jersey in 2014 and 2020. JEAN was previously indicted for kidnapping an 18-year-old woman outside of Covenant House, a non-profit organization that supports young people who have experienced homelessness and trafficking. JEAN is now charged in a New York State Supreme Court indictment with multiple counts of Predatory Sexual Assault, Kidnapping in the First Degree, and Sex Trafficking, among other charges. [1]

"The horrific allegations against Alex Jean continue to grow as immensely brave survivors come forward to our office," said District Attorney Bragg. "This indictment alleges utterly despicable acts of kidnapping, sexual violence, and other forms of violence and coercion. Newly Announced Superseding Indictment

According to court records and statements made on the record in court, in March 2014, JEAN kidnapped a 19-year-old woman by pushing her into a car after she was released from a hospital. JEAN forcibly raped and drugged her, created advertisements for sexual acts, and trafficked her from a New Jersey motel until she was able to escape.

In Summer 2020, JEAN kidnapped a 22-year-old woman who stopped working for him, took her back to his Manhattan apartment, repeatedly raped her, and trafficked her.

Both women called the Office's Human Trafficking help line to report these allegations after seeing the announcement of JEAN's initial indictment.

Previous Indictment

According to court documents and statements made on the record, on April 19, 2021, JEAN approached an 18-year-old woman outside of Covenant House with a co-conspirator and took her to an apartment building on East 132^nd Street where he raped her repeatedly over two days. JEAN also brought her to a hotel in Brooklyn, where she was trafficked and raped by other men who were brought to the hotel room.JEAN was extradited from Florida, where he fled after he discovered law enforcement was looking for him.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant D.A. Marcella Lupski, under the Supervision of Courtney Razner (Deputy Chief of the Human Trafficking Unit), Jonathon Junig (Chief of the Human Trafficking Unit) and Justin McNabney (Chief of the Special Victims Division). Investigative Analysts Alexa Underwood, Mary LeSeur, and Nina Huang , Human Trafficking Clinical Director Melissa Martinez, and Investigator Sean Ryan provided invaluable assistance.
