Council’s plans to meet housing need

Council's plans to meet housing need

Posted on : 15 Nov 2024Two recent reports by Caerphilly County Borough Council highlight levels of local housing need and plans to meet this.

Cabinet members unanimously endorsed Caerphilly's Local Housing Market Assessment and Prospectus, which analyses housing need in the borough and sets out long-term strategic housing priorities. During the same meeting, Cabinet also approved a new Property and Land Acquisitions Policy, which offers a robust system for bringing more homes into its housing stock.

The assessment shows that over the next 5 years, 218 affordable homes are required per year in the Caerphilly borough - 160 (73%) social rented and 58 (27%) intermediate housing.

Cllr Shayne Cook, the Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, said "These reports are vital in helping us understand the housing needs of local people and how we can plan to meet these.

"Despite significant progress made by the Council in delivering its ambitious new build programme, the national housing crisis continues, and homes cannot be built quickly enough to meet the ever-increasing demand for affordable housing.

"With around 5,500 applications currently registered on the Caerphilly Common Housing Register, we recognise that we need a range of innovative tools at our disposal; the Property and Land Acquisitions Policy sets out some of these."

Both housing reports can be found at Agenda for Cabinet on Thursday, 14th November, 2024, 2.30 pm
