WASHINGTON, DC - Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:
Born on a farm in the Jim Crow South, Congressman David Scott knows the unique challenges that our farmers face and he has spent his entire life fighting for the least, the lost and the left behind. Throughout his two decades in Congress, Rep. Scott has been a champion for combating inequities in rural and urban communities alike. He has been a steadfast advocate for the essential food and nutrition programs that sustain our children, seniors and families and helped secure $150 million in scholarships for students attending 1890 African American Land-Grant colleges and universities - scholarships that will now be named after Congressman David Scott in recognition of his incredible legacy.
In the 117th Congress, David Scott made history by becoming the first African American to ever Chair the House Agriculture Committee. As a senior member of the Committee during passage of the last three Farm Bills, Rep. Scott fought to secure critical disaster assistance for farmers and worked to bring millions of good-paying jobs to our rural communities.
I am grateful for David Scott's years of leadership atop the House Agriculture Committee and know that the Caucus will continue to benefit from his expertise and wisdom as we enter the 119th Congress and negotiate another critical Farm Bill.
