New bat-themed exhibit at City Hall combines local art and environmental awareness

The City of Sacramento's Office of Arts and Culture is featuring an exhibit at City Hall that highlights the essential role bats play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

Curated by the City's Emerging Curators Fellow Bridgètt Rex, the exhibit "Bat HabiTAT" aims to raise awareness of the ecological significance of bats and celebrate the talents of local artists. It will be hosted at the City Hall Robert T. Matsui Gallery (915 I Street) from Sept. 20-Dec. 13.

"This exhibit brings together an incredible group of artists, each with their own distinct perspective and passion," said Rex. "It's a reminder that creativity can thrive in all stages of life."

The exhibit features 10 tattoo artists and one origami artist from Northern California who have created unique pieces inspired by live bat observations at the Yolo Basin Foundation.

One featured artist, Shaina Hernandez, attended the Yolo Basin Foundation's Bat Talk and Tour, which inspired her artwork titled "Twilight Pursuit." After learning about the significance of bats and seeing them up close, she felt compelled to honor these fascinating yet often misunderstood creatures in her art.

"Bats represent a peaceful dark and moodiness," Shaina said. "It was important to me that the bats be portrayed as innocent. So often they are depicted as scary or verminous."

The gallery's hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This exhibit is wheelchair accessible.
