EU and UNDP open leisure and social support centre for older people in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

At the centre, older people can spend their free time with like-minded people, which eases the adaptation process for internally displaced men and women as they settle into a new community.

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine have supported a grant project to refurbish the Centre for Leisure and Social Support of older people in Synelnykove, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The grant funds enabled repairs to take place, and furniture and sewing equipment to be purchased. The centre now hosts group sewing classes, bringing together the older generation of internally displaced people and locals.

The idea for creating a space for older people initially was of the local charitable foundation "Dobrobud 2022". The foundation reported that even at the beginning of the full-scale invasion while they were providing humanitarian aid to displaced people, their team often encountered requests from older persons who lacked opportunities for meaningful socializing and leisure.

Therefore, they decided to engage older people with sewing classes. Now, a sewing technologist is working with them at the leisure centre, where attendees can alter clothes and socialize. The youngest attendee is 50 years old, and the oldest 88.

In addition to the classes, an on-site psychologist regularly conducts psychological consultations at the centre. Currently, group meetings are in greater demand, attended by families, though individual sessions are also available with the specialist.

Stefan Schleuning, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Ukraine, underscored the vital role of local initiatives in easing the adaptation of internally displaced people to their new communities", remarked Mr Schleuning."The European Union is proud to support this leisure and social centre in Synelnykove. It will help to create dignified and comfortable conditions for older people to participate in the life of their community."

Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, stated that through the small grants programme, UNDP is supporting local NGOs and promptly addressing community needs. "This initiative is exemplary, as it allows us to work alongside civil society to implement crucial social projects that improve the lives of community residents, especially those new residents who have found a safe haven here, escaping from the ravages of war."

The centre for leisure and social support was opened with UNDP support, and financial support from the European Union in the framework of the "EU4Recovery - Empowering Communities in Ukraine" project.
