Daniel Schwartz, a professor of Jewish studies at George Washington University, was appointed chair of the Center for Jewish History's Academic Advisory Council and named a fellow of the American Academy for Jewish Research (AAJR), recognizing his expertise in modern Jewish history and his distinguished scholarship, including authorship of notable works like "Ghetto: The History of a Word."

The AAJR represents the oldest organization of Judaic scholars in North America. Fellows are nominated and elected by their peers and thus constitute the most distinguished and most senior scholars teaching Judaic studies at American universities.

Schwartz is the author of "Ghetto: The History of a Word," which traces the various and contested meanings of the word "ghetto" from sixteenth-century Venice to the present. His other works include "Spinoza's Challenge to Jewish Thought: Writings on His Life, Philosophy, and Legacy," and "The First Modern Jew: Spinoza and the History of an Image."
