Several Arrested in Nairobi Crackdown on Illegal Dumping; Lorries Impounded for Dumping Hazardous Waste

Nairobi, 1st October 2024

Several arrests have been made today during a joint operation on illegal dumping conducted by Nairobi City County's Environmental, Monitoring, Compliance and Enforcement team and National Environment Management Authority in Industrial area.

Two Lorries were impounded while dumping along Likoni road, of which one was dumping hospital waste. The drivers who were operating without valid licenses were arrested and booked at Central police station.
Those arrested along Falcon road were found operating illegal dumpsites along the road thus causing obstruction.

Commenting on the joint operation, Ms. Maureen Njeri, the County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi sent out a stern warning to those carrying out illegal dumping and littering the City, adding that culprits will be charged to serve as a strong deterrent to others who may be engaging in similar activities. She said that it was important for everyone to take responsibility for proper waste disposal and refrain from littering the City.
"Today's operation between County and NEMA is a step towards ensuring a cleaner and safer city for all and it should serve as a message to anyone involved in illegal dumping in Nairobi. We are actively monitoring and taking action against those responsible for polluting environment." Stated Ms. Njeri.

The Environmental Monitoring, Compliance and Enforcement team continues to conduct 24-hour operations in manning illegal dumping hotspot areas across the City, demonstrating the County's commitment in addressing the issue of illegal dumping.
