Franciscan University Offers Fall Continuing Legal Education Courses

The Center for Criminal Justice, Law, and Ethics at Franciscan University of Steubenville will offer continuing legal education courses for law and justice professionals throughout fall 2024.

In "Ethical Foundations for Attorneys," Paul Boyles, an experienced law enforcement lieutenant and visiting instructor of criminal justice at Franciscan University, will examine ethical systems and lead discussions on real-life ethical dilemmas to help participants better evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their approaches. The course will be held Friday, October 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In "Law, Ethics, and Religion in America," Kevin Govern, a legal expert who has taught at the United States Military Academy, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, California University of Pennsylvania, and Franciscan University, will give a one-day seminar on the origins of the law and the moral and intellectual principles relevant to the American legal system. The course will be held on Saturday, November 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In "Aquinas: Virtue, the Natural Law, and Modern Problems," Dr. Charles Nemeth will discuss the relationship of virtue and law, guided by the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Nemeth is the director of Franciscan University's Criminal Justice Program and the Center for Criminal Justice, Law, and Ethics. The course will be held on Friday, December 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Registration is $159 per course. Continuing legal education credits have been approved for Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Discounts for non-lawyers are available.

All three courses will be held at Franciscan University's campus.

The Center for Criminal Justice, Law, and Ethics also offers online, video-based courses on topics that include natural law, happiness and the legal profession, less lethal options in use of force, and more.
