October 2024: Disability Employment Awareness Month

WHEREAS,October 2024 marks the 79th Anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and,

WHEREAS,the purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities; and,

WHEREAS, the history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, and since the original declaration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month by the United States Congress in 1988, Congress has continued to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities; and,

WHEREAS,in recognition of the contributions of America's workers with disabilities past and present, the theme for the 79th Anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is "Access to Good Jobs for All"; and,

WHEREAS,activities during this month reinforce the value and talent people with disabilities add to our workplaces and communities and advance Michigan's commitment to the goals of opportunity, full participation, economic self-sufficiency, and independent living for people with disabilities; and,

WHEREAS,the State of Michigan calls upon employers, schools, and other community organizations in Michigan to observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October with appropriate programs and activities, and to affirm Michigan's commitment to an inclusive community that increases access and opportunities to all, including individuals with disabilities; and,

WHEREAS,competitive, integrated employment is crucial for self-advocates and all individuals with disabilities to live independently and contribute to society, and the State of Michigan will continue to take steps throughout the year to recruit, hire, retain, and work to advance competitive, integrated employment opportunities for all residents; and,

NOW, THEREFORE,I, Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2024 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Michigan.
