Policy priorities and engagement take center stage at ‘Raices’ conference

The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus held an impactful "Raices" conference this year, where its Senate members engaged with community members and organizers. The mid-September event featured roundtable discussions that fostered dialogue around policies and priorities, allowing attendees to share their ideas and concerns. This collaborative environment not only facilitated networking but also aimed to shape the 2025 Raices policy priorities, ensuring that community voices are heard and represented in legislative efforts.

Several panels centered on equity, justice, and community development, offering Senate members of the Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus profound insights into the needs and aspirations of community members. These discussions deepened their understanding of pressing issues, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing the challenges faced by the community.

Senate members also articulated their vision for the ILLC's future. "Understanding that when we're breaking glass ceilings or opening doors, it's not just for ourselves as individuals, but for the entire community. We must remain mindful that as we build, we never lose our humanity or our sense of belonging," emphasized ILLC co-chair Senator Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago).

The Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus Foundation's "Raices," meaning roots, serve as the cornerstone of their public policy initiatives. These pillars-health equity, Latino representation, economic justice, education, and immigration and language access-reflect the diverse issues impacting Latino communities across Illinois. They embody a steadfast commitment to remaining grounded in these areas as the Caucus advocates for the needs, aspirations, and opportunities of Latinos.
