Closure of local link in Llwydcoed for a footbridge replacement

The main work scheme to replace the Riverside Footbridge in Llwydcoed will begin next week - and the structure will therefore be brought out of use to the community from July 8 until later this year.

The structure provides a key link for pedestrians and cyclists between Lon Las and the Cynon Trail. The footbridge is in a poor condition and will be replaced by a new structure that is wider and more suitable for the community's use.

Utility diversions have recently been completed on site, enabling the main scheme to start from Monday, July 8.

With the existing footbridge being demolished as part of these works, the link over the river will remain unavailable throughout - starting from July 8. The new footbridge is anticipated to open for the community in late autumn 2024.

From July 8, pedestrians and cyclists should take an alternative route that will be clearly signposted. This will be available via Lon Las, Cwmynysminton Road, Llwydcoed Road and the Cynon Trail - or this route in reverse order. Access over the footbridge cannot be maintained for emergency services.

The Council has appointed Horan Construction Ltd as the contractor to deliver the scheme.

A spokesperson for Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: "Thank you to the community in advance for your cooperation during this upcoming footbridge replacement in Llwydcoed, which will require the necessary closure of the public right of way over the river. The main scheme will start from Monday, July 8 - and therefore the footbridge will remain closed from this date.

"Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the community - and please be aware that the scheme will not affect access along the Cynon Trail itself. We have recently appointed a contractor for the main scheme, and we will work closely with them to make good progress over the months ahead."
