Cross Mountain Park Set For Entrance, Sidewalk Upgrades

Fredericksburg, Texas - Cross Mountain Park will soon have a new entrance and better sidewalk connectivity, after the City of Fredericksburg received a donation from the Nimitz Rotary Club.

This week, the Parks and Recreation Department will remove the existing entrance, which leads from the parking lot to the park's main trail. That demolition work will be followed this weekend by local gate and rock contractors, who will set in place a new gate and rock entrance with a wider walkway.

Later this year, a new sidewalk will be built from the south side of the park along the parking lot to the new entrance. The entrance is slated to be completed by the end of August and the sidewalk work by the end of October.

During the project, orange construction fencing will block off the work area, but the park's main trail will still be accessible. There is no park closures planned as part of the new entrance and sidewalk installation. The City will add an additional sidewalk from the park to Cross Mountain Drive in the future.

The City would like to thank the Nimitz Rotary Club for their continued support and this donation to CrossMountain Park.

About Cross Mountain Park

Located on North Milam just at the outskirts of town, Cross Mountain is a historic marl and limestone hill with an elevation of 1951 ft. It was used as a Native American lookout prior to the town's settlement. In 1847, a timber cross was found on the hilltop. Early Fredericksburg pioneers gave this hill the name "Kreuzberg" or Cross Mountain. In 1946, a permanent lighted cross was raised. The park's latest edition was a new cross that was installed in February 2024 with support from the Nimitz Rotary Club. Cross Mountain Park is open dawn to dusk. There is no fee to enter the park.
