Women’s Equality Day Spotlight: Angela Sakryd

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -

Can you tell us about yourself?I am a supervisory property disposal specialist at DLA Disposition Services Aviano, Italy. I grew up in a military family - my dad retired as a Navy chief and my brothers served in the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

Describe your job in a sentence or two. As operations supervisor for the Aviano hub, I am here to primarily support DLA'S mission in Italy, but our team also works together to support the warfighter across the Europe and Africa region.

How long have you worked for DLA Disposition Services? I have worked for DLA for 15 years and I also worked for two years as an educational aide at Sasebo, Japan, where my former husband was stationed aboard USS Essex.

What is your favorite thing about your line of work? I enjoy getting to work with our customers and getting to know their backstories. I also appreciate training them on the significance of property accountability and completion of 1348s, giving our customers the tools to support their mission.

What is the best piece of advice someone has given you? Take a chance and take the job that's going to give you the best career growth.

What do you think about when you hear Women's Equality Day? A day to acknowledge that as women, we are fully capable of accomplishing the hard tasks.

Why is it important to you that we celebrate Women's Equality Day? It's important to acknowledge everyone's contribution to the success of our mission.

Who's your biggest influence? Carolyn Quander. She retired from DLA Disposition Services more than 10 years ago. She made no excuses and worked herself up into a supervisory position. She always acted in the best interest of the government.

Name your favorite/recent book(s) you have read. "Turn the Ship Around," by L. David Marquet.

What was your first job? Bagging groceries in Corpus Christi, Texas.

What is your best memory of working here? I got to launch a surveillance drone in Afghanistan.
