Water Service Line Notifications are on the way!

November 7, 2024

Durham Water customers:

Approximately 54,300 customers will receive a service line notification in the mail over the next week. Per the requirements of the EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revision, Durham Water is required to send notifications to all customers with service line materials classified as "Lead", "Galvanized Requiring Replacement", or "Unknown". These letters are being sent in English and Spanish.

This notification letter is informational and requires no action by the customer-other than we want you to read it and learn about your water service line!

Fortunately, no lead service lines have been identified in Durham as of November 7, 2024.

Customers who do receive a notification letter will be receiving an "Unknown" notification or a "Galvanized Requiring Replacement" notification.

If a customer's water service line material was classified as "Copper", "Brass", "Plastic", "PVC", "Steel", or "Not lead", they will not receive a notification letter.

Background

As part of the Lead and Copper Rule Revision, Durham Water is creating an inventory of all water service line materials in Durham. We submitted our initial inventory to the state of North Carolina in October 2024.

If a customer's service line material is "Unknown" or "Galvanized Requiring Replacement", there is the possibility that the service line material could potentially be made of lead or be able to leach lead from the service line into the water. Information on the health effects of lead in drinking water and how to minimize potential exposure to lead is included in the notification and can also be found at www.durhamnc.gov/5184.

Durham Water encourages customers to identify their service line or sign up to receive a free service line inspection-these free inspections are limited, so act quickly. Call 984-242-3012 or email [email protected] to add your name to the inspection list.

Customers with crawlspaces who identify their service line may be eligible for a $30 water bill credit. So far, 764 customers have submitted their service line material for a water bill credit.

For information on how to identify your service line and receive the credit, visit www.durhamnc.gov/5184

One of Durham Water's next tasks is to create a replacement plan for "Lead" and "Galvanized Requiring Replacement" service lines. By identifying your service line and submitting it, Durham Water can create a more comprehensive replacement plan.

There is NO PENALTY for identifying a "Lead" or "Galvanized Requiring Replacement" service line. Knowing your service line material could benefit your health and will assist with prioritizing the replacement plan.

While customers may request a water testing kit to test for lead, this test does not identify your service line material. If you're interested in requesting a free water testing kit, call Durham One Call at 919-560-1200.
