Augusta Ramps Up Trash and Debris Removal Efforts in Response to Hurricane Helene

[AUGUSTA, GA, - October 3, 2024] - In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the City of Augusta has launched a comprehensive debris removal operation to clear the streets and neighborhoods affected by the storm. The community is mobilizing in partnership with local contractors, emergency services, and residents to ensure the safe and efficient disposal of storm-related waste and debris.

Debris removal crews have already been deployed to assess and clear major roadways, public spaces, and critical infrastructure areas. Augusta Georgia's Environmental Services Department will provide scheduled pickups for storm-related debris in residential areas. Residents are encouraged to separate storm debris from regular household waste, placing larger items like fallen trees, branches, and building materials in designated areas.

The city has contracted with licensed debris removal companies to expedite the clearing process, with a focus on removing downed trees, damaged structures, and hazardous materials. Residents should avoid piling debris near power lines or utility poles. Debris removal crews are expected to start collections the week of October 7. They anticipate making more than one pass for collections if needed in the following weeks.

Augusta's waste collection contractors are currently working their normal routes throughout Augusta as possible. The collectors are working to catch up on missed collections due to storm debris. Residents can place household trash in both trash and recycling containers at the curb. Richmond County residents who show proof of residency can take household waste ONLY to the Augusta Landfill with no fees during the period Friday, October 4, 2024, and Saturday, October 5, 2024, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM at the customer drop of area (C.D.O.).

Administrator Tameka Allen, stated, "The primary goal is to restore safety and normalcy to the residents of Augusta - Richmond County as quickly as possible. Removing debris left in the wake of the storm is crucial to keeping Augusta's roads clear and preventing any potential hazards. Augusta is working diligently with emergency management teams and first responders to prioritize areas that are most affected."
