On August 28th, officers arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a recent hit & run that occurred on Alcatraz Avenue.

On August 26th at 8:16 am, a 33-year-old man was crossing Alcatraz Avenue at the intersection with Dover Street-pushing his 9-month-old daughter in a stroller. As he crossed from the southwest corner, they were struck by a dark color sedan travelling eastbound on Alcatraz Avenue. Although the driver initially stopped after the collision, the driver decided to leave the scene-last seen driving south on Dover Street. An alert witness was able to take a photograph of the vehicle that included its license plate.

As a result of the hit and run collision, the child received several broken bones as well as a head injury from the collision.

Using the license plate of the suspect's vehicle, officers placed a "felony want" in the system for the vehicle.

On the afternoon of August 28th, San Leandro PD officers received an alert from their ALPR cameras that the wanted vehicle was in their vicinity. The officers found the vehicle (a black 2000 Chrysler 300) parked in a shopping center and waited for the suspect to return. When the suspect returned to the vehicle, San Leandro PD detained the suspect and notified Berkeley PD. Officers from Berkeley PD went to the scene and arrested the suspect on suspicion of felony hit and run.

This is one more example of how impactful ALPR cameras can be in assisting in law enforcement investigations.
