NEWARK URGES RESIDENTS TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS AS WILDFIRES CREATE SMOKE IN NEW JERSEY

Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Department of Health and Community Wellness Director Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook are urging residents who are sensitive to particle pollution, to consider reducing activity levels or shorten the amount of time individuals are active outdoors.

Due to smoke from the continuing New Jersey/New York wildfires, Newark residents may experience air quality issues and are advised to stay alert regarding potential air quality concerns.

An Air Quality Index (AQI) of 100 or below is considered moderate to good, and generally satisfactory for most people. The AQI in Newark registered at 79 this morning, which is considered moderate. This may still be a concern for people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution, such as those with asthma, children, older adults, or people who are active outdoors.

To protect yourself from poor air quality:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Keep your windows closed.
  • Use an air purifier if possible.
  • If you must go outside, limit your physical activity and wear a mask.

The Newark Department of Health and Community Wellness will continue to monitor the air quality and will issue updates as needed.
