IONE - California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials are investigating an attack on a peace officer at Mule Creek State Prison (MCSP) as an attempted homicide.
On Nov. 14, 2024, at approximately 6:21 p.m., incarcerated person Kevin Alvarado allegedly while being escorted to his cell from the shower turned and attacked a correctional officer.
Staff immediately responded to assist the officer from the area, medical personnel were summoned and 911 was activated. The officer was immediately transported to an outside medical facility where he was treated and was released that evening.
An inmate-manufactured weapon was found at the scene.
Alvarado has since been placed in restricted housing pending. CDCR officials are currently investigating the incident. The case will be referred to the Amador County District Attorney's Office for possible felony prosecution.
Peer support services are being offered to employees.
Alvarado, 30, was received from Los Angeles County on July 8, 2019. He was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole for second-degree murder and one year, four months for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, to be served concurrently. On April. 19, 2021, he was sentenced by a Kern County court to four additional years for assault by a prisoner with a deadly weapon and possession/manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner, a Thompson Decision/in-prison offense.
MCSP, which opened in 1987, houses more than 3,800 minimum-, medium- and maximum-security incarcerated people. The prison, located in Amador County, provides educational, medical and mental health services.
