With the design for the new Santa Monica Pier Bridge finalized, the city of Santa Monica will soon seek experienced bridge contractors and construction management professionals beginning in Spring 2025 to replace the 85-year-old structure.

Flanked by the famous blue archway at its entrance, the Pier Bridge is a crucial link from Palisades Park and Colorado Avenue and has welcomed millions of residents and visitors to the world-famous Santa Monica Pier.

The new bridge will include seismic safety upgrades, increased functionality and accessibility, and will feature expanded walkways, new lighting and railing. The $29 million project will also include the removal, rehabilitation and reinstallation of the historic blue pier sign, under the supervision of an architectural historian and neon conservator. A smaller replica pier sign will be installed on the Pier during the course of the construction.

In the coming months, the city will finalize necessary permits and in Spring 2025, issue a Request for Bids from experienced bridge contractors and will seek proposals from construction management firms.

The Pier Bridge Replacement Project represents a significant opportunity for an experienced and dedicated partner to contribute to a landmark that will serve the Santa Monica community for generations to come.

Details of the RFB will be posted online here. Interested contractors and firms are encouraged to establish an account and review the information thoroughly. Questions can be directed to [email protected].

Construction is expected to begin in late 2025. A temporary pedestrian bridge would be installed prior to the demolition of the existing bridge to ensure uninterrupted access to the Pier and its amenities. The Pier will remain open for business and accessible to visitors throughout the construction period.

The project is anticipated to be completed ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, in preparation for the hundreds of thousands of additional visitors to the region.
