Securing clean and affordable energy, and ensuring adequate housing for all - European Commissioner-designate Dan Jørgensen has what it takes to deliver on two of the biggest challenges facing citizens. This is the conclusion of the Party of European Socialists (PES) following the hearings in the European Parliament.
The current Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy in the Socialdemokratiet-led Danish government set out his priorities as he faced Members of the European Parliament.
Reflecting commitments outlined in the PES manifesto for the 2024 European elections, the Commissioner-designate will oversee the EU's first-ever European Affordable Housing Plan, efforts to strengthen investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and action to combat energy poverty.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
"Across Europe our citizens continue to face real challenges with the cost of living , with energy and housing being two of the biggest factors. The EU can and must act, and this invaluable work must be in the hands of someone who has both the experience and the clear commitment to social justice that is needed to deliver. Dan Jørgensen is the ideal figure and this was proved by his performance in the European Parliament.
"The socialist and democratic family's commitment to everyone's right to decent and affordable housing, and clean and affordable energy, is clear. Working in partnership with the Commissioner for Energy and Housing, we look forward to delivering for the benefit of all citizens."
The Energy Union; reducing energy prices; upgrading and investing in energy infrastructure; the Clean Industrial Deal; an Action Plan for Affordable Energy Prices; boosting the roll out renewable energy and energy storage; an Electrification Action Plan; action to end Russian energy imports; a clean energy investment strategy for Europe; Europe's approach to nuclear; carbon capture; fossil fuel subsidy phase out; energy taxation; and a Citizens Energy Package - these are just some of the areas Dan Jørgensen will focus on as European Commissioner.
In addition to energy-related actions, the Commissioner will spearhead the first-ever European Affordable Housing Plan; a European Strategy for Housing Construction; a pan-European investment platform for affordable and sustainable housing; cohesion investments in affordable housing; State aid rules reform; and proposals to address issues arising from short-term accommodation rentals.
