The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is clearing dead and dying vegetation along State Route 49 to reduce wildfire risk and create fuel breaks for an emergency evacuation route in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties.
The work is being completed in support of California's Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan. It began in early June and will continue through late July, requiring one-way traffic control in two to four-mile stretches of the highway. Motorists can expect 10-to-15-minute delays; however, longer delays are possible.
Work will be performed Mondays through Thursdays from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Fridays from 7:00 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Tuolumne County, and Mondays through Fridays from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. in Calaveras County.
The weekly schedule by location is as follows:
