Hundreds of Bank of Hawaii employees, family members and friends were joined by students at Princess Ruth Keelikolani Middle School earlier today to spruce up the campus in Downtown Honolulu. The volunteers, known as the Bankoh Blue Crew, also painted an inspirational mural in the hallway in hopes of encouraging generations of students to come.

The large volunteer effort marked the bank's 17th annual Community Service Day, uniting more than 250 people with a common goal of giving back to our local community. Today's maintenance work was made quick by many hands across the campus assigned to a variety of projects including:

  • priming and painting building walls, railings and trim
  • power washing sidewalks and exterior stairs
  • raking, sweeping and pulling weeds
  • picking up trash

As a special gift to the school, volunteers also created a mural inside the C Building with a motivational message for the 6th - 8th grade students: Think Big. Dream Big. The mural, titled "Head in the Clouds," was designed by local artist Kelsie Kalohi of Kelsie Dayna Designs and painted by Bank of Hawaii employees at Community Service Day.

In addition, Bank of Hawaii Foundation presented a donation of $10,000 to Princess Ruth Keelikolani Middle School. Bank of Hawaii has a unique relationship with this school, located just a few blocks away from its Main Branch and Honolulu headquarters. Every year since 2009, bank employees have visited the Title 1 school to teach early financial education to the young students, many of whom live in government and affordable housing complexes or transitional and homeless shelters.
