Biology professor honored with Award of Excellence for his contributions to algae research

Chuck Amsler, Ph.D., has received the highest honor from the Phycological Society of America.Chuck Amsler, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has received the Award of Excellence by the Phycological Society of America, a lifetime career achievement award to recognize significant contributions to phycology, the study of algae.

The award honors scientists for a record of sustained scholarly activity, including teaching and service.

"With this award being one of the highest honors given by the society, winning it is extremely humbling," Amsler said. "I feel honored to have impacted this area of science through my research."

Amsler has been a trailblazer in phycology for more than three decades, becoming a leading macroalgal chemical ecologist. His research of algae's interaction with the chemical environments has made him a top Antarctic researcher in ocean acidification and sea ice retreat.

"I found a fascination with algae since my first phycology course, and I just knew that was what I was going to study," Amsler said.

Amsler has made major contributions to the phycology field, alongside playing a significant role in the PSA. He has served in several leadership positions on the organization's executive committee, including president and chair of the Board of Trustees.

Having worked at UAB for 30 years, Amsler has touched the lives of over 800 students. He says winning this award is a great encouragement for the next generation of scientists.

"I tell students that following their interests is the best way to excel as a scientific researcher," Amsler said. "My mentors significantly shaped my success in phycological research; never underestimate the power of a good mentor."
