New Bed, New Sleep Style

Your brand-new Mattress Firm mattress has just been delivered; and now the restless nights of tossing and turning will soon be a thing of the past. Since you're investing in your health with a new mattress, let's now take a look at your "sleep style" or also called sleep position as a vital component of your overall sleep health.

Everyone has a preferred sleep style, that's the manner in which your body naturally is positioned on the mattress. Identifying one way to sleep as ideal for everyone is a near-impossible task. Instead, focus on finding a way that's comfortable and natural for you.

Take a minute to figure out your current sleep position by looking at the following attributes for each one. Then, consider if you want to reposition the way you sleep as you break in your new bed.

On Your Back

Sleeping on your back makes it easier for your head, neck and spine to align in a neutral position.

In fact, sleeping on your back - with your arms at your sides - is widely considered the most comfortable sleep position, providing an optimal position for spine and neck health. Try using a softer pillow for extra support for the back of your neck.

Like a Starfish

Sleeping on your back with your arms up and out is often called the starfish sleep position. Resting this way has been linked to the prevention of facial wrinkles and skin breakouts. On the flip side, Daily Health Post reports back sleepers could suffer from sleep apnea and snoring.

On Your Stomach

Considered one of the more popular sleep positions, stomach sleeping does not support the natural curve of your spine. And while it may certainly be beneficial for serious snorers, stomach sleepers often report chronic head and neck pain in the morning.

On Your Side

With both arms down and your spine at rest in its natural curve, sleeping on your side has been reported to reduce back and neck pain, alleviating the effects of disorders like sleep apnea. But be careful, side sleepers are known to wake up with some arm pain every now and then. Those considering sleeping on their sides should use a contour pillow that provides adequate head and neck support.

If you decide to adjust your sleep position, be patient. You spend one-third of your life in bed, so your body has trained itself to sleep a certain way. Similar to your new Mattress Firm mattress, it all comes down to comfort. Try out a few of these sleep styles to see if a change can eliminate any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing.
