WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, Ph.D. (D-NC-12) released the following statement on the passing of Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee:

"My heart is broken for my colleague, my friend, my Soror, and my sister, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Congresswoman Jackson Lee took every opportunity to stand up and speak out on the floor of the House with her distinctive and resonating voice of reason on behalf of the voiceless. Larger than life, she was a breaker of barriers and and a true champion for her people, be they from her district in Houston, Black Americans fighting for racial justice, or all of the American people, collectively struggling for a more perfect union. I will miss working with her in that good fight. I will remember her every Juneteenth, a federal holiday because of her.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee came to Charlotte to help campaign for me in my first run to represent most of the city, beginning our long and dear friendship. I will pray for her family and rededicate myself to the work we shared."
