The University of Toledo Medical Center received a "B" hospital safety grade in the most recent report from the Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit focused on improving patient safety.

UTMC is the highest-ranked hospital in the greater Toledo area in the report, which was released Friday.

"Quality and patient safety are our priority at UToledo Health," said Dr. Michael Ellis, UTMC's chief medical officer. "This Leapfrog grade demonstrates our commitment to providing the highest quality of care while identifying areas where we can continue to improve. We are dedicated to achieving an even higher standard of safety in future assessments."

Leapfrog's safety grades are based on an analysis of more than 30 publicly available performance measures, including rates of hospital-acquired infections, patient falls and injuries, and surgical complications. The grade also considers policies and procedures hospitals have in place to prevent errors and improve patient safety outcomes.

UToledo Health, which improved its Leapfrog grade from the spring report, has taken steps to strengthen its protocols, including enhancing infection prevention processes, streamlining patient care management and expanding training programs for clinical staff, all of which contribute to the improvement in patient safety.

Ellis said the "B" grade reflects the hospital's efforts to improve patient safety protocols and acknowledges the progress UToledo Health has made in implementing effective safety measures and policies.

"UToledo Health would like to thank its dedicated staff and providers for their hard work and commitment to advancing patient safety and well-being," Ellis said. "We remain committed to transparency and excellence as we strive to create a safe and compassionate environment for all who seek care."

Leapfrog evaluates nearly 3,000 U.S. hospitals, assigning safety grades twice a year. More information and full grading details are available free to the public on the Leapfrog Group website.
