TRAFFIC ADVISORY: The City of New Orleans Reminds Residents of Continued Construction Near Superdome

NEW ORLEANS - The City of New Orleans reminds residents and visitors of the continued construction on Poydras Street between S. Claiborne Avenue and LaSalle Street. To ensure safety, both the City and the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO) have temporarily paused their respective construction activities in this area.

The street is currently reopened to vehicular traffic, reduced to two travel lanes at Poydras and LaSalle, where a 36-inch water main is being repaired by SWBNO contractor.

In preparation for Essence Fest, SWBNO will place barricades and safety fencing around the open construction area to ensure safe passage for vehicles and to accommodate festival attendees with two travel lanes open to vehicular traffic near the Superdome.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) began work on Poydras Street in May 2024. This project includes concrete panel repairs, pavement restoration, sidewalk and driveway apron repairs, installation of ADA-compliant curb ramps, and restriping high-visibility crosswalks. Following the completion of SWBNO's 36-inch water main repair, DPW will resume street repairs on the left two lanes between S. Claiborne Avenue and S. Liberty Street and perform a drain line point repair at Poydras Street and S. Liberty Street.

The City of New Orleans appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and visitors during this essential construction period. These temporary adjustments are aimed at ensuring the safety and convenience of everyone during the high-traffic Essence Fest weekend.
