The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) held its annual meeting from June 28-July 1 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Awards

Dr. T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner Award

Dr. Lauren Powers

Dr. Lauren Powers (Tufts '94), Huntersville, North Carolina. A diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) in avian practice, Dr. Powers is specialty service chief of the avian and exotic pet service at Carolina Veterinary Specialists in Charlotte, North Carolina. She also serves as an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Powers is a past president of the AAV and has served on and chaired several of its committees, including the AAV Research Committee, AAV Education Committee, and AAV Conference Committee. She has also served as vice chair of the ABVP Exotic Companion Mammal Practice Credentials Committee and served on the ABVP Avian Practice Credentials Committee.

Wild bird: Sandi Willows-Munro, PhD, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, received $5,000 for "Disease surveillance in wild lovebirds: Exploiting a rare opportunity to fill a major knowledge gap."
