HSD Funding Opportunity to Invest in Congregate Meals for Older Adults in King County

The Seattle Human Services Department (HSD) is seeking applications from organizations interested in helping older adults address their nutritional needs. Approximately $502,000 is available through this RFQ from the Older Americans Act Title III C(1) and Nutrition Services Incentive Program (NSIP). Initial awards will be made for the period of January 1, 2025-December 31, 2025. Contracts may be extended through 2027, depending on performance and funding availability.

"Congregate meals are served at community sites where older people can also socialize, form and maintain relationships, enjoy activities, and get connected to other services and resources," said Mary Mitchell, director of Aging and Disability Services, a division within HSD. "For centuries, and across cultures and religions, the communal meal has played a key part in building community. Maintaining those connections for older adults helps them stay healthy and independent."

The 2024 East and South King County Congregate Meals RFQ will ensure older adults continue to receive nutritious and culturally relevant meals. Approximately 12 previously identified senior and community centers in East and South King County are being considered to receive meals.

The Older Americans Act (OAA) Nutrition Services, part of the Administration on Aging within the Administration for Community Living, provide grants to states to help support nutrition services for adults age 60 and older. The services are intended to:

  • Reduce hunger and food insecurity
  • Encourage social engagement
  • Promote health and well-being
  • Delay the onset of adverse health conditions resulting from poor nutritional health
