Infrastructure, Policy, and Decarbonisation Critical to Securing Victoria’s Freight Future

The Victorian Government's planned refresh of the State's freight strategy is an opportunity for a long-term roadmap that incorporates the major decarbonisation challenge ahead of us.

Port of Melbourne has been actively contributing to this process, with a focus on an integrated infrastructure pipeline to support the strategic direction of the freight sector in Victoria.

As Australia's largest general cargo and container port, handling more than one-third of the nation's container trade, Port of Melbourne welcomes the opportunity to be involved in ongoing consultation and engagement, reflecting our commitment to improving infrastructure and efficiency, while ensuring future prosperity for the state.

With Melbourne projected to become Australia's largest city by the mid-2030s and container volumes at Port of Melbourne expected to double by 2050, new infrastructure and capacity upgrades must be prioritised. Further, to bolster Victoria's freight system, Port of Melbourne advocates for the correct settings that will foster capital investment with a focus on long-term economic outcomes.

Port of Melbourne's vision for an upgraded and improved freight system is maximising our state's assets through the vestige of strong policy frameworks, encouraging investments that will ensure we are sustainable, competitive and productive for decades to come.
