Built to Lead: Marine Veteran Finds Success at Wentworth

Adam Bodien's journey from the Marine Corps to the classroom at Wentworth Institute of Technology highlights the power of resilience, discipline, and a commitment to leadership. As a veteran seeking a new direction, Bodien found Wentworth's supportive community and hands-on programs the perfect fit for his skills and goals.

After six years in the United States Marine Corps, serving as a platoon sergeant and company police sergeant, Bodien sought a degree program that aligned with his leadership experience. He found that match in Wentworth's Construction Management program and is on track to graduate next year with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Deeply engaged with the university's Military Connected Office, Bodien was the keynote speaker for the 2023 Veterans Celebration. Ahead of this year's event, he speaks about his experience as a Marine-turned-Wentworth student and advice he offers adult learners who are thinking of going back to school later in life.

Greg: What was it about Wentworth, particularly its Construction Management program, that attracted you?

Adam: As a veteran with experience in leadership and managing others, Construction Management appealed to me greatly. It correlated with my skills as a problem solver and leader, pushing others while ensuring the safety and wellbeing of my team.

Greg: How has your experience in the Marines prepared you for your courses here?

Adam: Having good time management and work ethic has definitely improved my success at Wentworth. Having the drive to accomplish tasks in a timely manner greatly coincides with mission success.

Greg: Have you found any resources or support networks helpful during your time with Wentworth?

Adam: The Military Connected Office and lounge has been a great resource but also an environment where I can socialize and meet people with a similar background. Having that support group has benefited me greatly throughout my time here.

Greg: What advice would you give to other veterans considering higher education?

Adam: Higher education is 100% worth it. You get prepared for a skillset and role outside of the military. It's been a challenging journey, but being challenged is something all veterans are familiar with and strive for.

Greg: Why might you recommend Wentworth to students who go to college later in life? Adult learners looking to earn a degree, those switching careers, or maybe coming from military backgrounds?

Adam: Having a military background and going back to a higher-level education has been very challenging. However, being older and having a wider and greater understanding of myself has greatly improved my experience.

Starting later granted me the opportunity to obtain a better understanding of myself, and what I want to pursue as well as approaching school and studying in a better, timely, and mature fashion.
