We’ll Stand Up for the Environment and Public Health

WASHINGTON- The Associated Pressdeclared former president Donald Trump the winner in Tuesday's presidential election.

Manish Bapna, president of NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council), made the following statement:

"The nation is in uncharted waters. This much we know for sure: Americans want a president to strengthen our democracy, not weaken it; to honor the Constitution, not attack it; and to respect the rule of law, not abandon it. Americans want our government to confront the climate crisis, not slam climate progress into reverse. President-elect Trump won the election, but his billionaire oil and gas cronies don't get to rule.

"If Trump tries to turn our government against the people it serves, we'll stand with the people. If he tries to purge the professional civil service we depend on for sound governance, we'll stand by those who face political attack. If he tries to roll back urgently needed climate gains, or follow his radical Project 2025 roadmap to environmental ruin, we'll stand up for the environment and public health - in the court of public opinion and in our courts of law.

"In Trump's first term as president, NRDC helped lead the resistance against his attacks on the environment and public health. We filed 163 cases against the Trump administration. We've won victories in nearly 90 percent of those that have been resolved, for one simple reason: the Constitution requires the president to follow federal laws. If he fails to faithfully carry out those laws, we have the constitutional right to petition our courts to compel him to do so - and we're prepared to do just that.

"Now's the time for everyone who cares about progress and change to affirm our commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law and the rights, freedoms and liberties that together we hold inviolate. As our institutions are tested, we will speak clearly on their behalf. As our laws are transgressed and flouted, we will insist that they be enforced.

"As our environment and health are put at risk, we will defend our families and communities from threat. Beyond Washington, state, local and tribal governments share a solid commitment to protect the environment and public health. We'll press for progress and those levels. We'll work with our partners and allies, the philanthropic community and those in the private sector that grasp the economic opportunity and the moral imperative to confront the climate crisis.

"Our purpose will not be shaken. Our voice will not go dim. For five and a half decades, NRDC has stood up to those who would put special interests ahead of the public interest, polluter profits ahead of our people, and bad habits of the past ahead of our future. That's who we are, and that's what we'll do. Now, more than ever, we'll stand up still."
