Statement of President Cordeiro on the election of President of the European Parliament

​​Commenting on the election of Roberta Metsola as the President of the European Parliament for the 10th legislative term, the President of the European Committee of the Regions, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, expressed his readiness to enhance the cooperation between the two political assemblies.

​"On behalf of the European Committee of the Regions, I would like to congratulate Roberta Metsola for her election as President of the European Parliament. I know her strong engagement with the Committee over the years, and we stand ready to work closely with the European Parliament in this new term.

The 10th legislative term of the European Parliament begins as the European Union faces multiple challenges, internally and externally. Setting up an ambitious Multiannual Financial Framework for the years to come, ensuring a reformed and robust cohesion policy for all regions, preparing for the next enlargement, are some of the essential tasks that lie ahead.

For this to be a success, there will be a need for the strong involvement of local and regional authorities. The European Committee of the Regions stands ready to work with the European Parliament, especially when it comes to holding the next European Commission accountable, through the confirmation hearings for the members of the next College of Commissioners, where specific attention should also be given to the role that local and regional authorities and the European Committee of the Regions can play in delivering the EU´s Strategic Agenda."
