Transcending Borders: UIW Celebrates International Education Week

During the week of Nov. 18-22, the University of the Incarnate Word proudly participated in International Education Week (IEW), a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education that celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. This annual event is part of their efforts to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences (U.S. Department of State, 2024).

UIW International Student and Scholar Services embraced this week-long celebration by coordinating over 20 educational events across the Broadway campus, offering students and other campus members the chance to learn about other nations and their respective cultures.

The week kicked off with inspiring words from Dr. Marcos Fragoso, vice president for International Affairs, at the IEW opening ceremony. "Education transcends borders, fostering understanding, innovation and connection," said Fragoso. "It equips us to tackle global challenges and build bridges between cultures. Let us embrace opportunities to learn from one another, celebrating diversity as a strength that enriches our classrooms, our communities and the world. I think together, we can create a future where knowledge knows no boundaries."

As part of UIW's IEW programming, Jose Martinez, director of International Student and Scholar Services, presented certificates and awards to offices that have provided exemplary service to international students. These honored recipients are chosen based on data collected from international students who have expressed appreciation for the efforts of various campus offices. This year's honorees included the Office of Registrar and the Wellness Center.

Opening messages were followed by the Parade of Nations, in which international students from UIW and St. Athony's Catholic High School walked throughout campus carrying their home country's flag. As the vibrant colors of various global flags flew, the rich diversity that is present within the UIW community was on proud display. At the end of the parade, each participating student shared a bit about themselves, their home country and their country's language.

The week offered other engaging events and activities such as the study abroad fair, an international alumni panel, the serving of global cuisines in the cafeteria and more. Each event offered a chance to consider new perspectives for those who sought to expand their worldly knowledge and views.

Sheena Connell, assistant director of International Student and Scholar Services, shared that "IEW isn't just about spotlighting our international population, but it's also about inspiring our community to try new things, to think beyond the familiar, to travel and embrace becoming a global citizen."
