The University of Salford and the China Academy of Art (CAA) recently partnered on an international workshop event to explore the possibilities of paper materials in fashion modelling.
Academics from the University headed to CAA's Liangzhu Campus in China last month to team up with staff from the Academy - one of the most prestigious college of fine arts in China - to guide students through the workshop and share their unique insights into fashion design.
The Salford academic delegation consisted of Bashir Aswat, Programme Leader for BA & MA Fashion Design, Paul Marsden and Dominic Barber, lecturers in Fashion Design and Yingxin Jiang, Associated Lecturer for Fashion Design. Professor Allan Walker, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology accompanied the academics for the event. They were joined by Xiaoding Wang, Shuying Wang, Huailei Yu and Jialu Li from CAA.
The workshop was designed to showcase the unique expressiveness of paper materials in fashion design whilst also delving into their potential to shape forms, construct layers and three-dimensional structures.
Students from the Academy were split into creative teams that included academic staff from both institutions as each team were given white paper and coloured tape to design and create garments on mannequins before presenting their creations to the other participants.
Bashir said: "We were pleased to collaborate with our colleagues from the China Academy of Art for this workshop facilitated by Salford academics. The event was characterised by creativity and individuality.
"The design outcomes produced by students working collaboratively in teams were innovative, allowing them to demonstrate their unique understanding and identity through the medium of 'Paper'.
"This event exemplified international collaboration between Salford and one of China's premier arts institutions. It also provided us, as lecturers, with an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the design process within an international and cross-cultural context."
The event is just another example of Salford's outstanding links with China's Higher Education fashion institutes.
In September, more than a dozen BA Fashion Design graduates showcased their designs in a show at the Ningbo Bang Museum through a collaboration with our partner university, the Zhejiang Fashion Institute of Technology. In November 2013, ten BA Fashion Design students visited the institute to undertake a one-day fashion project as part of four-city fabric sourcing trip.
