Civil Rights Leader to Outline Election's Impact, Threats to Voting, Women's and LGBTQ Rights

CHICAGO, IL (August 21, 2024) - Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of National Action Network (NAN), will address the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Thursday night, where he will outline what is at stake in the 2024 Presidential election. The civil rights leader's remarks come ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris' historic nomination as the first Black woman to lead a national ticket.

"You have been able to feel the significance of this convention throughout the last few days, but Thursday night will truly be one for the history books when a woman of color becomes the standard bearer of a party for the first time," said Rev. Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the NAN. "What's at stake in this election is just as important, as Project 2025 and those who support threaten to further erode the rights of Black Americans to vote, women to dictate their own health, and LGBTQ people be who they are. We are in a fight to ensure this nation is truly just for all, and I look forward to making that case to the Convention Thursday night. I know that Shirley Chisholm, who 52 years ago put the first big crack in the glass ceiling, will be in the room with us for this generational moment."

Rev. Sharpton's remarks bear historic significance as he served as the national youth director for Shirley Chisholm's pioneering 1972 presidential campaign when he was just 18 years old. The Brooklyn Congress Member became the first Black woman in American history to seek the Democratic nomination for President, which faced resistance even within her own party. Monday night's opening for the DNC paid tribute to that trailblazing run; the game-changing 1984 and 1988 campaigns of Rev. Jesse Jackson, who Rev. Sharpton served as youth director for at 13 years old; Rev. Sharpton's own candidacy in 2004; and the 2008 election of Barack Obama as the first Black President of the United States.
