His Majesty The King opens the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen’s Summer Show

Today, His Majesty The King at Duthie Park officially opened the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen's annual summer show.

The King delighted onlookers as he toured the event marquee and met with RHS members and Duthie Park staff.

This year, the society is celebrating its 200th anniversary with a series of events to mark this milestone occasion.

For decades, His Majesty has championed and taken an interest in nature and environmental conservation. Earlier this year, the RHS Aberdeen were delighted as His Majesty became their official Patron - following in the footsteps of his late Mother, Queen Elizabeth II and his Grandfather, King George VI.

Brian Grant, Chairman of the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen said: "It has been an honour to welcome His Majesty The King to the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen's 200th Anniversary Summer show.

"We are lucky to have a hard working team of volunteers who give up so much of their time to put on two spectacular flower shows each year.

"People are sure to see some great exhibits coming from all over Scotland. And I'm sure it is set to be a 'blooming' marvellous show".

Aberdeen City Council In Bloom Champion Councillor Neil MacGregor said: "It was fantastic to have His Majesty The King visiting one of Aberdeen's most loved parks today. As the RHS Aberdeen celebrates its 200th anniversary, it was a very fitting way to mark the incredible milestone occasion."

The Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen was formed in 1824 by four men who called a public meeting to form the society. Throughout its 200 years it has remained a voluntary organisation whose aim has been to 'advance knowledge and encourage the practice of horticulture in the community'.

This weekend's Summer Show runs until tomorrow (Sunday 1 September) and is open from 10am - 5pm.

More information about the society and this weekend's show can be found on their website.
