The opening of a new dental clinic at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical CenterOutpatient Care East location signals an important expansion of health care services to meet the community's needs.

The dental clinic is part of Ohio State's Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), which is a community-based health center that receives federal funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Since 2012, it has operated as Total Health and Wellness, a nurse practitioner-led primary care practice run by the Ohio State College of Nursing offering health care services regardless of one's ability to pay.

Now, in partnership with the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, the program is expanding as The Ohio State University Total Health Care Center. It will bring the medically underserved population more integrated access to comprehensive physical and mental health services, such as the new dental clinic, specialty care, pharmacy, vision care and more.

"From the very beginning, our mission has been to care for the whole person and help them manage any chronic conditions or health concerns they may have," said Candy Rinehart, who leads the Total Health Care Center. "The interdisciplinary, team-based model that we use has improved outcomes for so many of our patients, and we are thrilled to continue building trust with and caring for this wonderful community that we serve."

In addition to existing sites at Ohio State East Hospital and St. Vincent Family Services, Family Community Medicine at Outpatient Care East joined the FQHC last November, allowing for a 50% increase in patients served.

"We're excited to work with the Total Health Care Center and the FQHC model of primary care. This is a proven approach that addresses critical gaps in care that too often occur for the medically underserved," said Ryan Haley, senior director of ambulatory services at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.

Additionally, Rinehart has wanted to add dental services to the FQHC for some time, and through assistance from State Sen. Hearcel F. Craig (Columbus), $1.2 million in state funding has been secured to do it.

"Throughout my time in public service, improving the well-being of our Columbus residents has always been my top priority," said Craig. "I am very proud to have advocated for the clinic at the Statehouse for several years. Good dental health is critical, especially for children; it builds a foundation for better overall health and confidence, leading to more success in the classroom and workplace. By investing in this clinic, we are not only supporting the well-being of our neighbors but also building ladders of opportunity for families and individuals to ensure a better future for our communities."

The new Outpatient Care East Dental Clinic is now open and taking appointments. A dentist and hygienist from the Ohio State College of Dentistry will see patients in six new treatment spaces.

"As dental professionals, we know good oral care is a pillar of a healthy person. We're excited to partner with the medical center and College of Nursing to provide dental care at Outpatient Care East. We believe it will be a comforting place to support adults and children on their journey to good oral health," said Matthew Messina, associate professor in the College of Dentistry.
