Sen. Fontana Announces Over $5 Million to Repair Schools

Today, State Senator Wayne Fontana announced grants totaling more than $5 million were awarded to make repairs to schools in the 42nd Senatorial District.

"I am proud to have advocated for state funding for environmental repairs to our schools," said Sen. Fontana. "It is important to all parents to believe, when they send their children to school, that the school building is safe. Their school should make them smart, not sick."

The Environmental Repairs Grant program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, provides grants to school districts, career and technical education centers (CTCs), and charter schools to improve water infrastructure and eliminate contamination, install point-of-use treatment devices to reduce lead and other contaminants, remediate mold or asbestos contamination, or for other projects that remediate environmental hazards in school buildings.

School Districts in the 42nd Senatorial District, represented by Sen. Fontana, received the following:

  • Pittsburgh SD - $4,108,863
  • Sto-Rox SD - $711,303
  • Carlynton SD - $197,761
  • Northgate SD - $83,717
  • Avonworth SD - 22,554

In just the last twenty months, Sen. Fontana has secured nearly $6.2 million in state funding for capital repairs and safety improvements at schools in his district.

Overall, 109 schools received grants totaling $75 million through the Environmental Repairs Grant program. To learn more about the program and for a list of all the awardees, visit the program website, here.
