Lipscomb's campus is about to kick into high gear with move-in day for new students arriving Aug. 12 and a wealth of student orientation activities, beginning-of-the-school-year traditions and annual get-togethers following close on its heels.

Traditionally hundreds of local and campus volunteers descend on campus to help new freshmen and transfer students move into the residence halls and to make their new space feel like home.

Move-in Days on Aug. 12-13 mark the beginning of QuestWeek, a weeklong series of events, from local service to academic advising, from the Running of the Bison to a church fair and the Sunset Social, to immerse new students into the Lipscomb community and prepare them for the first day of classes.

On the first night of QuestWeek, freshmen who are legacy students, children of Lipscomb University alumni, are invited to the annual Legacy Dinner to welcome them to campus, and the orientation week caps off with the candlelight Initium ceremony in Collins Auditorium on Aug. 18.

The more than 4,000 students heading back to campus this year will notice some repairs and upgrades to the residence halls and the intramural field; new HVAC systems in Sewell and High Rise residence halls and Allen Arena; and a new props shop for the Department of Theatre.

Students will also enjoy new options on the Lipscomb menu this school year, with smashburgers and a rotating burger topping bar, fresh-brewed ice tea and warm cookies and dessert bars arriving in Bison Café; a new Mexican eaterie, additional Asian offerings and a "Just Baked" vending machine providing hot food 24 hours a day in the food court; and a juice machine and live student entertainment at Freshens.

Once classes begin on Aug. 19, the month will bring a wealth of back-to-school traditions that Lipscomb alumni and supporters can be involved in as well:

  • The traditional White Coat Ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 9 in Collins Auditorium, marks the beginning of the professional education for new pharmacy students, who individually receive a white medical coat in a formal ceremony with family and friends in attendance. The purpose of the ceremony is to reinforce defined professional expectations and responsibilities before students even began their training.
  • On Aug. 19 at 10 a.m. until Aug. 20 at 10 a.m., volunteers from the Lipscomb community will hold, On the First Day We Pray, 24 consecutive hours of prayer for every student and faculty and staff member. This season of prayer takes place in Club 1891 in the Bennett Campus Center, and anyone is invited to come join the prayer throughout the 24 hour period. You can share your own prayer requests for this special day here.
  • President's Convocation, a special Gathering to mark the official start of the new school year, will take place on Aug. 20. Held in Allen Arena, the event features faculty marching in regalia, a welcoming speech by President Candice McQueen and the annual appearance of the beloved bagpipe ensemble.
